Custom sticky notes: print areas, sheet counts and pad construction
Cover vs edge vs full-sheet printing, why the adhesive is a strip and not a coating, and how sheet count quietly dominates the unit price of a custom sticky note order.

Sticky notes are a stationery product, and stationery buyers ask different questions than merch buyers. The three that matter here: where the print goes, how many sheets, and what the pad is actually made of. Deciding them in the right order saves the most money of any product on this site.
Print areas: cover, edge, or every sheet
- Cover print — your artwork on the top sheet (or the backing card behind it). The standard. The cover is what gets seen on a desk, in a shop, in a flat-lay photo.
- Edge print — artwork or text printed on the sides of the pad, visible when stacked. Subtle, lovely for brand marks and short quotes; invisible when the pad is in use.
- Every sheet — the design repeats on each sheet. The most expensive option in sticky notes by a wide margin, because each sheet is a print operation.
The honest sequence: decide where the artwork has to be for the product to make sense, then ask for the price. Full-sheet printing chosen first — because it seemed like the premium version — is the single most common over-spec we see on quotes. A chat-window parody pad like the one in our sticky notes photos reads perfectly with cover printing; the customer only ever sees the cover until they’re using the product, at which point the design has done its job.
Sheet count: the quiet price driver
Sheet count moves the unit price more than artwork does, because paper is the material cost and every sheet is bulk. Common pad sizes run 25 / 50 / 100 sheets; 50 is the workhorse. The decisions:
- 25 sheets — gift-with-purchase territory, sampler pads, designs you’re testing.
- 50 sheets — the standard sellable pad; what most “custom sticky notes” end up being.
- 100 sheets — for pads that will genuinely live on a desk for months, or where price-per-sheet is your selling angle.
Unlike badges, sticky note sheet counts are usually flexible rather than fixed-machine sizes — which means you can tune them to a price point. When a quote feels heavy, halving the sheet count usually does more than simplifying the artwork.
Pad construction: what makes a sticky note “sticky”
The repositionable magic comes from a low-tack adhesive — historically the acrylate microsphere adhesive developed at 3M in the late 1960s and famously applied to bookmarks by Art Fry — applied as a narrow strip along the back edge, not a full coating. The strip is the feature: it lets sheets peel cleanly, re-stick, and not gum up the stack.
What you can actually specify:
- Strip coverage — the standard is a strip along the top edge of the back; wider strips or double strips exist for heavier use.
- Adhesive strength — “repositionable” is the default; it’s designed to release cleanly from paper. If your notes must survive a car dashboard, that’s a different adhesive conversation to have with your supplier honestly.
- Paper — uncoated bond in common weights; smoother or premium stocks exist. Heavier paper prints finer detail and feels more “grown up” in hand.
Packaging
Pads ship shrink-wrapped as standard, which protects the adhesive strip from picking up lint in transit. Printed belly bands, backing cards and opp-with-header are the usual upgrades — and for a product sold on design, the backing card is where cheap upgrades earn their keep, because the cover print is doing the selling.
One honest note: our real sticky note photography is thin on construction detail — the product page shows real pads from our range, but no edge-print or adhesive macro shots yet. If edge printing is in your plan, ask for it explicitly in your quote so it goes on the spec sheet from day one.
